Hi there, I’m McKenzie, creator of amaiMama!
I am a linguist, new mama, and coffee-lover from the Pacific Northwest, but currently live in northern Virginia with my family. I am married to the one and only love of my life, my college sweetheart Kevin, who was born and raised in Japan but is ethnically Chinese, Japanese, and Korean! Our life is culturally rich and exciting – we love cooking food and listening to music from all over the world, and traveling whenever we can.
When my husband and I found out we were expecting our first baby, we looked at hundreds of blogs for resources about everything pregnancy and parenting-related:
- What types of items should we put on our registry?
- How should we plan a baby shower when we are in the midst of a pandemic?
- Will my morning sickness ever end? (spoiler: it didn’t)
and most importantly…
- How will we effectively raise our multiracial children to be proud of and involved in all of their cultures and ethnicities?
It was during this phase of research that I found a startling lack of material about being in an Asian male-white female (AMWF) interracial marriage and about parenting half-Asian children.
Thus, amaiMama was born!
I designed this blog to develop and share resources for other mamas with interracial families, and to create a community of families like ours. As a new mom, the road ahead can feel overwhelming, but we certainly don’t have to go it alone! Even if you are not raising an interracial family, I’m sure you will find useful information and tips here – every mama is welcome!
On the blog, you’ll find posts about pregnancy, motherhood, and the unique joys of parenting mixed-race children in today’s increasingly multicultural world. I especially love to write about cultural differences between my husband’s life experience and my own, and how we are blending all of our cultures into our childrens’ life story. We’ll discuss the highs and lows of raising bilingual kids, and I’ll share things our family loves, including recipes and cultural events.
Join me on this wonderful journey – I can’t wait to get to know you!
